MHL Top 20: Feb. 3

1. Austin Prep Cougars, 12-0-2 (Last ranking: 3)

The Cougars are one of just two unbeaten teams left in Div. 1, and since a 5-5 tie vs. Central Catholic on Jan. 16, three of their five wins have come by a single goal.

2. Malden Catholic Lancers, 8-1-3 (Last ranking: 7)

MC’s only setback remains to an out of state opponent in Delbarton (N.J.) – which also happened to be its season opener. The Lancers aren’t scoring tons of goals, but the tandem of Brian Cannata and Kyle Casey in net makes the relative lack of offense a non-issue.

3. Arlington Spy Ponders, 12-1-1 (Last ranking: 8)

Speaking of teams that haven’t lost since the season opener, Arlington is 12-0-1 since dropping a 7-3 decision to Pope Francis in early December. One of the Spy Ponders’ 12 wins includes a 2-1 triumph in the rematch over PF on Jan. 23.

4. Catholic Memorial Knights, 10-2-2 (Last ranking: 2)

CM finally lost to an in-state team (Malden Catholic) on Jan. 26, but the Knights (3-1-1 in the Catholic Conference) remain the only team that can catch the Lancers (5-0-0) in the standings. The teams play again on Feb. 11.

5. Hingham Harbormen, 11-2-2 (Last ranking: 4)

Hingham has already matched its win total from the 2015-16 regular season – when it made the Super Eight – but it will be interesting to see how the Harbormen react to a 9-3 loss at home on Monday vs. Central Catholic, Hingham’s worst regular season loss since 2014.

6. Walpole Rebels, 15-0-1 (Last ranking: 6)

The Rebels continue to lead Div. 1 in both goals scored (80) and goals against (8) by a healthy margin. If the loss column remains blank, they’re very much in play for a call from the Super Eight committee.

7. Pope Francis Cardinals, 11-2-1 (Last ranking: 1)

Another year, another Catholic West title for the Cardinals. But they’ve dropped two of their last three games, making tomorrow’s showdown in Hingham very, very intriguing.

8. BC High Eagles, 8-1-4 (Last ranking: 5)

The Eagles have allowed the third fewest goals in Div. 1 (15). They have just three wins in their last six games, but the other three results have been ties.

9. Marshfield Rams, 11-1-2 (Last ranking: 10)

Marshfield’s only loss is to Hingham, so no shame there. If the Super Eight is the goal, a few more quality wins wouldn’t hurt. The Rams still have Franklin and Arlington or Andover (Ed Burns tournament) left on their schedule.

10. Central Catholic Raiders, 9-3-3 (Last ranking: 17)

Any team that can hang nine goals on Hingham at Pilgrim is worthy of the top 10 of our rankings.

11. Franklin Panthers, 10-4-0 (Last ranking: 18)

Quietly, the reigning Div. 1 State Champs are racking up wins. May have something to do with the fact three of their games have been in Rhode Island, with a fourth vs. LaSalle Academy coming up.

12. Burlington Red Devils, 9-4-1 (Last ranking: 16)

The Middlesex League-Freedom Division title is pretty much a lock (the Red Devils are up seven points on Melrose with five games left each). Now comes the question whether or not Burlington has a run in them to return to the Super Eight.

13. Andover Golden Warriors, 11-4-0 (Last ranking: 11)

Recent setbacks against Central Catholic and Hingham didn’t derail the Golden Warriors much, as they responded with a 6-0 blanking of Billerica.

14. St. Mary’s Lynn Spartans, 9-4-1 (Last ranking: 13)

The Spartans are 5-1-0 outside of the Catholic Central, but just 4-3-1 with a plus-2 goal differential within.

15. Xaverian Hawks, 5-5-3 (Last ranking: 14)

Outscoring Old Colony League opposition 18-1 in two games is nice, but tying BC High twice proves the Hawks have what it takes to hang with the teams near the top of the rankings as well.

16. Framingham Flyers, 8-3-3 (Last ranking: N/A)

Framingham handed Walpole its first non-win of the season in battling back from an 0-2 deficit to tie the Rebels last week, and in knocking off Braintree on Wednesday night, has claimed the top spot in the Bay State Conference-Carey Division.

17. Braintree Wamps, 9-4-1 (Last ranking: 12)

Braintree suffered its first shutout loss of the season in surrendering the Carey Division to Framingham on Wednesday night.

18. Wellesley Raiders, 10-4-0 (Last ranking: 19)

Walpole is grabbing most of the headlines out of the Herget Division, and rightfully so, but Wellesley is really coming on of late too. The Raiders’ lone loss in their last four games is a 2-1 setback against the Rebels last Saturday.

19. Reading Rockets, 9-5-1 (Last ranking: 15)

Congratulations to Reading head coach Mark Doherty, who won the 100th game of his career on Wednesday night vs. Wilmington, 1-0.

20. Duxbury Dragons, 8-5-2 (Last ranking: N/A)

Duxbury has allowed the second-fewest goals in Div. 1, with 14.

Next 5 Out: Natick (8-4-2), Waltham (8-5-3), St. John’s Prep (5-6-3), Triton (8-3-2), Arlington Catholic (6-5-1).

Division 2 and 3 teams to keep an eye on: North Reading (12-0-1), Scituate (13-1-1), Rockland (15-0-2), Hopkinton (12-0-1), Shrewsbury (11-0-0), Old Rochester/Fairhaven (14-1-0), East Boston (12-2-1), Medway (9-3-2).Nantucket (12-0-3), Latin Academy (9-0-4), Southeastern/West Bridgewater (13-0-2), Canton (10-3-2), Westwood (9-3-1)
