Dexter Southfield vs Thayer Academy Recap

It was a great night to be at the Dexter Southfield School as Thayer and Dexter battled out to a one-goal game in front of a packed and rowdy crowd. Starting in net was Gavin Fitzpatrick for Thayer and Dylan Silverstein for Dexter. Lets see how this one played out:

1st Period:

Both teams came out flying in the first as they traded chance for chance. Dexter was first to the scoreboard as Brendan O'Donnell buried a one-time shot in the slot off of a beautiful pass from Ben Raymond on a three on two. Dexter took all of the momentum in front of their home crowd, but Thayer was quick to respond with two goals to take the lead. Declan Loughnane sniped one from the blue-line and Mike Stenberg grabbed the puck in the slot to bury one, which ended the period with Thayer up by a score of 2 to 1.

2nd Period:

Dexter took control of the game in the second period as they peppered the Thayer net with shots. With a 5 on 3 powerplay, Dexter pulled even as Culin Wilson sniped one from the halfwall beating Fitzpatrick. Dexter was quick to take the lead following the tying goal as Doug Grimes circled the offensive zone with the puck and maneuvered his way to the slot for a shot that rang the inside crossbar. With Dexter leading 3-2, Gavin Fitzpatrick made a remarkable windmill save with the pads stacked to keep Thayer within striking distance.

3rd Period:

The third period was similar to the second as Dexter controlled the majority of the play. With about 9 minutes left in the game, Thayer managed to generate some offense. With the puck in the offensive zone, Mike Stenberg found the back of the net again as he backhanded one in from the slot to tie the game at 3. Dexter turned up the tempo even more now, keeping the puck in the Thayer zone for what felt like the rest of the period. A sequence with about 2 minutes left resulted in goaltender Gavin Fitzpatrick sliding out of the net into the corner. As the puck made its way to the point, CJ Monturio came up huge with a game saving block in front of his teams empty net. The play continued as Thayer managed to move down the ice and send the puck towards the net. In the same sequence where Monturio made a game saving block, he managed to find the puck in a net-front scramble and chip it over the fallen goaltender to put Thayer ahead with just about a minute left. The game was not over yet, as Dexter had an offensive zone faceoff with the goaltender pulled. Dexter won the draw and slid the puck over to Brendan O'Donnell for a rocket of a one-timer. With Fitzpatrick sliding to his right, he managed to reach across his body and grab the puck out of the air while completely off balance. This was the game winning save as Thayer held on for a 4-3 victory over a dominant Dexter team.
