Roger Williams rolls in night honoring James Stowe

FALL RIVER--Spurred on by the emotions of honoring their former teammate James Stowe, the Roger Williams Hawks picked up their first win of the season in a convincing 7-3 triumph over the visiting Montclair State Red Hawks.

Stowe, who graduated from Roger Williams in May, passed away on Sept. 13 after a three-year battle with testicular cancer. Stowe played hockey at RWU through his junior season in 2015-16 while undergoing treatments.

Two of his former teammates, Tim Kelleher (Marion, Mass.) and Kevin Murphy (Walpole, Mass.), joined the broadcast of last night's game and spoke highly of Stowe, who was just 24 years old. Stowe's No. 13 jerseys, both home and away, hung over the RWU bench. Stowe's obituary was printed out with programs on lavender paper, which is the official color of testicular cancer awareness.

Freshman Griffin Gagne recorded a hat trick for Roger Williams, the first three goals of his collegiate career. Christian Brinkley, Scott Taylor, Jeremy Lawton and Nick Hart also scored for the Hawks. In all, six of the team's seven goals were scored by freshmen. It was the first home game of the season for RWU, which plays its home games at Driscoll Arena in Fall River - about 10 minutes from its campus in Bristol, R.I.

There will be an additional event in Stowe's memory on Friday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. at the Westerly Yacht Club (1 Watch Hill Rd., Westerly, R.I.) for those interested in further honoring his legacy.
